What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations conferences simulate United Nations, International Organizations etc. – in which participants are assigned to represent countries, organizations, or leaders in order to debate pressing international issues. Over a series of committee sessions, “delegates” or attendees to the conference, have to work together constructively in order to introduce working papers and eventually draft resolutions. The sessions end when the committee votes on all the introduced draft resolutions, generally choosing to adopt a single document that addresses the problem being discussed.
During a conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. These skills include public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing.
The sessions are moderated by a chair, assisted by a co-chair and are run under rules of parliamentary procedure (which have been posted separately). Simulations at an MUN conference strive to recreate the difficulties posed by global politics and diplomacy. As students face international crises, they learn to understand and enact solutions to real world challenges and even cover issues that may appear in the future.
The conference is being conducted for you, as the 3rd semester of Political Science mentions the role of the UN, its specialized organs and primary functions performed by the world body, as a separate unit. In order to aid you in better comprehension of such proceedings, this event has been put together. We hope that you make it count as a practical understanding of your curriculum in a fun, fun way!
