Why MUN?

Ok that’s an interesting one. Explaining the importance, relevance and significance of an MUN to a beginner! Participating in Model United Nations is an excellent way to develop one’s negotiation skills, learning to communicate and forming solutions with peers from around the world, as well as to broaden one’s perspective on a variety of international topics. Delegates earn an invaluable leadership experience, as they deliberate with international diplomats on important issues, forming solutions to important global problems. In today’s era of rapid globalization, the leadership, organizational, creative, and personal skills that the delegates develop at the conference will be useful for students from all careers, specially law. College delegates therefore desire a more quick and intense debate where they can challenge each other’s knowledge and viewpoints as well as sharpen their own skills, and small or crisis-oriented committees can provide that. Veteran delegates who seek a refreshing Model UN experience will also find this in creative and crisis-oriented committees.
MUN conferences are beneficial for delegates who have advanced knowledge and skills, are able to take advantage of the small groups for networking (although you should be networking to some extent regardless of the size of your committee), and can participate in committees that match their career interests. These committees are actually very fun and students are highly encouraged to try them at least once so that they have some traditional Model UN experience under their belt.
Finally, many college Model UN delegates are career-oriented and will find committees that match their career interests very appealing. United Nations diplomats are not the only people who influence foreign policy these days, and diplomacy is not the only career field that requires Model UN skills. A presidential cabinet, a corporate board of directors or a sporting organization can influence world issues too, and corresponding simulations such as Barack Obama’s Cabinet, Google Management Team, and International Olympic Committee provide experience and insight into these diverse players. Experience in such committees can even provide a resume boost; I know one Model UN friend who had to do research on Google’s policies and partially attributes that experience to her being hired by Google. So yeah, it’s definitely not a “mindless exercise” as some would like to put it; it’s got so much more to enrich anybody interested in international affairs, politics, diplomacy and international law to top it all.
At the end of the day, no other competitive event makes you have as much fun and also learn in the process. Last heard, I don’t recollect any!..But then, that’s an avid mun’er group writing this!!…However, we do promise to make the committees as interesting as we can possibly so as to cultivate an enhanced interest in the whole MUN culture; that culture which made us so passionate about it in the first place.
